YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – If you're looking for money and you can't seem to find any, you might have a tax credit that will help you out.
Window Depot of Youngstown can do that with their windows and doors.
"I'm happy to talk about the tax credit that's available through the end of the year, but also can renew every single year until 2032," said Window Depot owner Richard Begalla. "A lot of our customers decide to do all the windows at once, which is great. You're going to get a great return on the investment of your home because it enhances the increased value of your home roughly about 72%,"
You can have a project done this year whether you do all of your windows and doors at once or just a few windows at a time.
"Additionally, tons of energy savings are available by replacing all of your windows and doors. But there's one other great way to save, and that's with the energy-efficient tax credits that are available from the government through 2032," said Begalla. "So it's 30% of your project that you spend for energy efficient windows indoors. Only 5% or less of windows in the country actually meet the criteria to qualify for the tax credit."
But how does one qualify for this tax credit?
"For Windows, it's $600 per year and for the entry doors, it is $500 per year," said Begalla. "So a homeowner can, in theory, spend $4000 and get an $1100 dollars tax credit."
Certain windows, however, will disqualify you from such a tax credit.
"What would disqualify you for the tax credit is what most companies offer. It's called a dual pane window. It's two pieces of glass. They may put a coating on there for an additional upcharge which blocks the heat from the sun," said Begalla. "And they may for an additional upcharge put a gas in there which serves as an insulation in between your windows. A spacing system is what separates the glass. It's what most companies unfortunately use because it's a lot lower cost because it's a metal spacing system where metal conducts hot and cold. It's a thermal circuit. So it's not going to be energy efficient because it's just dual pane, and it does have that metal in there. Additionally, you'll notice there's no insulation in between those frames."
Windows from Window Depot of Youngstown are rated the number one quality vinyl window year after year and have received the Energy Star Sustainability or Partner of Excellence award for seven consecutive years. The reason? Window Depot of Youngstown offers three panes of glass instead of two so you have an extra barrier of protection.
But how do three panes make the difference?
"Instead of putting one pocket of gas, which is called argon--it's heavier than oxygen, we're putting two pockets of that gas, which makes it substantially more energy efficient," said Begalla. "You think about it like putting insulation in between your walls. Same concept. Then we also put that coating on there which blocks the heat from the sun. We put two coats of that coating per surface so you're getting four in total."
Windows from Window Depot of Youngstown also does not use staples in its windows, but rather a non-metal spacer. Those types of windows were developed for high altitudes, but also to not create that thermal conductivity.
"So it retains that gas at a much better rate and it also doesn't conduct that hot and cold. Additionally, we also put insulation in between the frames of our window as well," said Begalla. "So frames are insulated. Three panes of glass. No metal can conduct. Retains the gas at a better rate. Much more coating to block the heat from the sun and two pockets of insulating gas, thus achieving what is called the energy is most efficient award."
You can also get the same kind of doors that block out the cold and keep in the heat so a homeowner can get huge savings not only by energy efficiency in their home, in increased value, but the tax credit as well.
